History of Mullens High School, Mullens, W.Va.
Mullens High School is located in Mullens,West Virginia. The original building was built in 1915, on what is now Highland Avenue, and was named The Slab Fork School. It was so named because it was the first high school in the Slab Fork District. After two years the Slab Fork District School changed it's name to Mullens High School.
During the first year, 1916, that the brick, two story building was used for grades 1-10. There were no students in the eleventh or twelfth grades. In 1918, the graduating class was given a two-year diploma. The two-year graduates were Viola Canaday, Frances Shrewsbury, Frank Dunman, Everette Poe, and Leslie Toler.
Due to increased revenue from property value assessments in Mullens, the Slab Fork District School Funds were given $50,000 for the enlarging of the school building. The addition of gymnasium, six new classrooms, and an office, equaled a 3-story building. This was the first school in Wyoming County to have an indoor basketball court.
The first school colors were green and gold. The colors were changed to blue and gray during the 1924-'25 term, when the nickname "Rebels" was chosen for athletic teams.
The last class to be graduated in this first high school building was in 1928. Fifteen members were in that class.
Upon completion of the new Mullens High School located at 801 Moran Avenue, the first high school became Ben Dunman School, due to Ben Dunman’s donation of several lots of land on which the school had been constructed. The new high school was occupied first in the fall of 1928. Nineteen persons made up the graduating class of 1929,the first class to be graduated from the new Mullens High School.
The only change to the building was to the front, when the gymnasium was added in 1950. In the early 1940's, the back of the building changed completely. Over the old gymnasium a major addition resulted in four classrooms and a large room, which doubled for many years as a library and a cafeteria. In the side room was a small kitchen. Added in 1952, the music wing consisted of a band room and four soundproof practice rooms. In 1956,a fence, concrete bleachers, a field house, and a baseball grandstand were constructed at the ballpark. That was the last major change in the school while the class of 1956 was in attendance. However, major building projects continued through 1986. In 1960,an up-to-date, well-equipped chemistry and biology rooms were added to the second floor and a spacious kitchen and a cafeteria were located on the ground floor. At the same time, the auditorium was renovated and remodeled. In the fall of 1961,the old biology room on the third floor was converted into a modern mathematics room. Added to the building in 1984 was the assistant principal's office, located adjacent to the office of the principal. Used for this purpose was a portion of the room in which for years home economics was taught. In 1985-'86,an elevator for handicapped persons was installed.
Enrollment increased gradually each year at the new high school, reaching its peak during the 1960's.During one or two years the enrollment exceeded 900. At that time, the building was so crowded that one class met in the corridor on the ground floor. Another met in the secretary's office; and stills another in the outer office of the secretary. During this time, Mullens High School was a 6 year school. After the Mullens schools were integrated, the ninth grade became the Mullens Junior High, housed in what was formerly Conley High School. From 1965-'79,Mullens High School was a 3-year school. In the fall of 1979,the ninth grade returned to Mullens High School.
Through the years Mullens High School has been considered one of the most outstanding schools in the state of West Virginia. In high-ranking positions across the nation are leaders who received their training at Mullens High School. The school's athletic departments won many state championships in basketball, football, wrestling, and tennis. Several coaches received national coaching positions and several students played in the AFL,ABA,NBA,and NFL.
Mullens High School has been consolidated with four schools. The first consolidation was with Maben High School in the fall of 1931. In the fall of 1965,Mullens High School and Conley High School were consolidated and in September of 1992, with Herndon High School.
At the beginning of the 1998-'99 school term, Mullens High School and Pineville High School were consolidated to form Wyoming East High School, located at New Richmond beside the Wyoming Continuous Care Center. The last class to graduate from Mullens High School was in 1998. There were 89 graduates in the class.
